Although advances in medicine have made anesthesia safe for pets, some risks still reside. To lessen these risks, we always perform a pre-surgical exam and require pets over seven years of age to have pre-surgical bloodwork. We strongly encourage pre-surgical bloodwork for all our patients regardless of age, however. Bloodwork helps to reduce surgical risks by ruling out internal problems, such as clotting conditions, liver and kidney anomalies, anemia, etc. Additionally, we place an intravenous catheter and give fluids to help your pet stay hydrated and maintain blood pressure.
